Lee shines as Phils rout Marlins

Sep 17, 2013 - 4:27 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts and drove in a career-high four runs to guide the Philadelphia Phillies to a 12-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

Lee (14-6) was spectacular on the hill, spinning eight innings while allowing just the two runs on eight hits. Perhaps more impressive was the left-hander's effort at the dish, as Lee went a career-best 3-for-4, including his first career triple.

"I try to do everything I can to help the team win," Lee said. "I try not to take any of it for granted."

Chase Utley and Darin Ruf homered for Philly, which won for the sixth time in its last seven home tilts. Utley also drove in the first four Phillies runs while Cesar Hernandez added two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Justin Ruggiano and Adeiny Hechavarria drove in a run apiece for Miami, which saw starter Sam Dyson (0-1) last just 2 2/3 innings. The Miami rookie, making his first start in the majors, allowed seven runs on six hits and four walks.

"He'll bounce back," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Dyson.

Hernandez worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and Jimmy Rollins slapped a ground-rule double to left, putting two on for Utley, who grounded the first pitch he saw to second, plating Hernandez.

The top of the Phillies order was at it again in the home half of the third. Hernandez singled to left before Rollins walked on four pitches, bringing Utley to the plate for his three-run jolt to right.

Later in the inning, Dom Brown sparked another rally with two outs when he reached on an infield single up the middle. Ruf then walked and Cody Asche shot a grounder into right. Giancarlo Stanton fired a dart to home plate, but Brown lowered his shoulder and jarred the ball loose from catcher Jeff Mathis, scoring the Phils' fifth run. Roger Bernadina then walked and Lee helped himself with a two-run single to right.

The Marlins broke through in the fifth on a Hechavarria single to center. Ruggiano, who led off with a double to left and advanced to third on Morrison's groundout, came around to score.

Lee's first career three-bagger drove in another run a half inning later, and Hernandez singled him in for a 9-1 margin.

Ruggiano doubled home Ed Lucas for the second Miami run in the top of the sixth, but Ruf's no-doubter to left gave the Phils an 11-2 lead.

Lee completed his special night with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh after Bernadina tripled to start the frame.

Game Notes

Lee's four RBI are the most for a Phillies pitcher since Robert Person had seven RBI on June 2, 2002 ... Lee's 13th strikeout was his 200th of the season, giving him at least that many in three straight seasons ... Dyson's start marked the 52nd game a rookie pitcher has starter for Miami this season ... Christian Yelich, Stanton and Mathis all struck out three times.
