Lucas lifts Marlins over Phillies in extras
Sep 19, 2013 - 7:08 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ed Lucas' solo home run in the top of the 10th inning helped the Miami Marlins to a 4-3 win and salvage a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.Lucas launched a slider into the seats in left field off Cesar Jimenez (1-1) to give the Marlins the go-ahead run in the 10th. Giancarlo Stanton brought in two runs with a home run in the sixth for the Marlins, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
Brad Hand (1-1) earned the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth, only allowing a walk to Jimmy Rollins. Steve Cishek worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 10th to pick up his 31st save of the season.
Chase Utley continued his strong offensive play by driving in two runs with a single in the fifth for the Phillies, who had their winning streak halted at two games.
"Solid year," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said about Utley. "He's swinging a real good bat. He's showing his power. He's showing his leadership. He's played a lot this year."
Neither starting pitcher ended up with a decision. Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi lasted five innings where he allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with four walks. Zach Miner only pitched three scoreless innings where he surrendered two hits and two walks for the Phillies.
Carlos Ruiz reached first on an error by Lucas at third base and advanced to third after Domonic Brown doubled on a line drive to right with no outs in the 10th. Darin Ruf flied out to shallow right. The Marlins decided to walk Cody Asche and load the bases in order to turn a double play. Cishek kept his composure and struck out Roger Bernadina before getting Freddy Galvis to ground into a force out to end the game.
"It got a little hairy at the end, but we made it through," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
In the fifth, Adeiny Hechavarria singled on a soft line drive to center. Ruiz's throw to second on an Eovaldi bunt was high and both runners ended up safe. A wild pitch from Luis Garcia allowed the runners to advance a base. Donovan Solan brought Hechavarria home on a groundout to second to give Miami the lead.
The Phillies scored three runs in the fifth. Bernadina walked after Asche flew out to center. Cesar Hernandez singled to right one out later, and Rollins was walked to load the bases. Bernadina rushed home after a pitch bounced off the glove of catcher Jeff Mathis and trickled behind him. Utley stroked a line drive into shallow right field to score Hernandez and Rollins.
Christian Yelich squeezed a single past Rollins in the sixth before Stanton crushed a slider past the center field seats and into the concourse, tying the game at three in the sixth.
Hechavarria made a great defensive play in the bottom half. The shortstop leaped high in the air to rob Asche of a line drive single, even earning the applause of the Phillies' fans.
