Wright homers in return as Mets top Phils

Sep 21, 2013 - 6:58 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - David Wright made his return to lineup a successful one, smacking a two-run homer among his two hits to help the New York Mets to a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

Wright's strained hamstring finally healed after it sidelined the All-Star for nearly seven weeks. He homered in his first at-bat and helped push New York to a lead that it never relinquished.

"You feel like when you're hurt, you're not really part of the team and not part of that camaraderie," Wright said. "You get out there and get those competitive juices flowing again, it was fun.

New York's top three hitters combined for seven hits, with Daniel Murphy going 3-for-5 and finishing with three runs scored and an RBI. Eric Young also had a pair of hits and drove in a run in the victory.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-3) had a stellar outing besides a rough fourth inning. He struck out six over six frames, allowing four hits, three walks and four runs. LaTroy Hawkins notched his 11th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Darin Ruf knocked in three of the Phillies' runs and scored the fourth. Cole Hamels (8-14) took a beating early and was charged with six runs on 10 hits over seven innings of work.

"Cole pitched well, he had good stuff," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Luck just wasn't on his side."

The Mets got going offensively right away, with each of their first three batters recording hits. Young dropped a double into right field, promptly swiped third and then scored on Murphy's RBI single up the middle. Wright, with his first swing, reached the right field seats to put the Mets up 3-0.

Hamels allowed another run in the third. Murphy began the frame with a single then stole his 20th base of the season. He went to third on a Josh Satin groundout before coming home on Andrew Brown's bloop into shallow right.

New York went ahead 5-0 in the fourth when Young lifted a soft drive into center to plate Travis d'Arnaud. The Phillies rallied in the bottom half of the frame to pull within one, but never came closer.

Ruf had a hand in all four runs. He came up with the bases loaded and ripped a Matsuzaka offering down the left field line to clear the bags. He was then fortunate enough to evade the tag of Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla during a run down. He reached third on the play, then scored on Hamels' groundout to make it 5-4.

Cody Asche ended the home sixth for the Phils trying to stretch a double into a triple. New York then restored a two-run margin in the next half frame on Satin's RBI groundout.

Game Notes

New York has won five of its past seven contests with the Phillies ... Philadelphia still leads the season series, 9-8 .... Hamels suffered his first loss in eight starts. He had been 4-0 over his last seven ... The Mets recalled infielder Wilfredo Tovar from Double-A Binghamton prior to the game.
