Hechavarria helps Marlins edge Phillies
Sep 26, 2013 - 5:11 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Justin Ruggiano came around to score the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning as the Miami Marlins took the rubber match of a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 3-2 win.Ruggiano drew a walk with one out in the eighth off Phillies reliever Ethan Martin (2-5) and moved to third on a Placido Polanco single. Adeiny Hechavarria, who plated all three runs for Miami, then grounded to short, and Jimmy Rollins' throw was not in time to get Ruggiano at the plate.
Steve Cishek worked around a leadoff single in the ninth and set a club record with his 28th straight save and 33rd of the season. Former Phillie Chad Qualls (5-2) finished the top of the eighth to earn the win.
"I really just tried not to think about it (the record), but I would be lying if I said it wasn't in the back of my head. I just tried to go out there and get three outs and help our team get the win," said Cishek.
Marlins starter Brad Hand held the Phillies scoreless through six but ultimately gave up two runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 frames. The Marlins won their first series with Philadelphia in nine tries.
Cole Hamels went six innings for Philadelphia and pitched well aside from one mistake in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Hamels left an 0-2 fastball over the middle of the plate to Hechavarria, who delivered a two- run triple to the wall in center, spotting Miami an early 2-0 lead.
"Being able to get to 200 innings is a goal every season. At least I will end on a somewhat positive note," said Hamels.
The Phillies finally broke through in the seventh and tied the score on a pair of singles to right by Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez. Darin Ruf doubled and Kevin Frandsen reached earlier in the frame, with the former scoring on Galvis' single, which chased Hand from the contest.
A.J. Ramos took over on the mound and struck out pinch-hitter Cody Asche before Hernandez muscled an RBI single to right. Rollins nearly put the Phils on top with a bloop to short center field, but Hechavarria retreated from shortstop and made a difficult catch.
