Rockies slide by Astros with 9th-inning heroics
May 29, 2013 - 2:55 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Michael Cuddyer's single brought home Troy Tulowitzki with the winning run in the top of the ninth, as Colorado clipped Houston, 2-1, in the second of a two-game interleague set."It doesn't surprise me with 'Cuddy'," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. "He's always looking to answer the bell. He's a great pro. Twenty-four hours ago I wasn't sure that he'd be playing this early, but he's going to find a way to get in the lineup."
Cuddyer ended up with three hits, while Tulowitzki added a pair of hits and drove in the other run for the Rockies, who split the series and halted a three-game losing skid.
Matt Belisle (2-2) tossed a scoreless eighth and Rafael Betancourt followed suit in the ninth for his 11th save of the season.
Chris Carter knocked in the lone run for the Astros, who head to Denver for the back end of this four-game interleague matchup having lost four of five.
Jose Veras (0-4) served up the deciding run during his one relief inning.
Tulowitzki greeted Veras with a double to the gap in right-center, then advanced on a wild pitch. Cuddyer then laced a base hit to left, plating the lead run. Colorado could have had more, but stranded runners on first and second when D.J. LeMahieu fanned swinging.
Betancourt turned in a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts to nail down the narrow victory.
Colorado picked up a run in the first as Dexter Fowler drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on Nolan Arenado's infield single and scored on Tulowitzki's hit to third.
Jose Altuve was plunked to start the home fourth and was caught stealing, but Carlos Corporan was also hit, moved to third on a J.D. Martinez double and scored on a fielder's choice grounder to third from Carter.
"I thought we swung the bats pretty well, as far as making hard contact, but we couldn't capitalize," Astros designated hitter Carlos Pena said. "We had our situations, but I think today is one of those games we just got beat. I don't think we beat ourselves that much. Those are the ones that are tough to take."
Game Notes
Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa scattered five hits and one run over seven innings, while Houston's Jordan Lyles also exited after seven frames and one run on six hits to his ledger ... Prior to the game, the Astros recalled pitcher Brad Peacock from Triple-A Oklahoma City to finish off the transaction performed after Monday's game of sending outfielder Robbie Grossman to OKC.
