ChiSox avoid sweep in Houston
Jun 18, 2013 - 6:23 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Dayan Viciedo's three-run triple capped a four- run sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox rallied for a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros to avoid a four-game sweep at Minute Maid Park. With Houston starter Bud Norris (5-7) pitching, Alejandro De Aza singled to lead off, but Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios lined out. Adam Dunn smacked a 1-1 pitch to center to put runners at the corners. Paul Konerko then delivered an RBI single to center.
After Conor Gillaspie hit an infield single to load the bases, Viciedo brought all the runners home with a triple to center for a two-run lead.
Nate Jones (3-4) got the final out in the fifth and pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the win, as the White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak.
"He's been great for us," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Jones.
Starter Jose Quintana needed 104 pitches to get through 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.
Jason Castro knocked two RBI doubles for the Astros, who were looking for their first four-game sweep at Minute Maid Park since Sept. 4-7, 2009, against the Phillies.
"None of those guys are looking to strike out. Sometimes, it's just a tip of the cap to them (the White Sox)," said Astros manager Bo Porter.
Castro's first double came with one out in the first, scoring Jose Altuve, who singled to shallow right.
In the third, Brandon Barnes hit a leadoff single, stole second base and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Hector Gimenez. Castro then ripped an RBI double that bounced off the right field wall.
Jones pitched in the seventh but gave up back-to-back singles to Barnes and Altuve before being replaced by Matt Thornton, who struck out Castro. Jesse Crain then came in relief. Altuve stole second to put runners in scoring position but J.D. Martinez and Chris Carter struck out to end the frame.
Addison Reed pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the White Sox and notched his 20th save.
