Dodgers complete sweep of D'backs Down Under
Mar 23, 2014 - 11:34 AM Sydney, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed five scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-5, to sweep the two-game season-opening series in Australia.Ryu (1-0) allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning five for the Dodgers, who beat Arizona 3-1 on Saturday. Yasiel Puig went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Dee Gordon had three hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in one in the triumph.
Trevor Cahill (0-1) surrendered five runs on eight hits and four walks over four frames for Arizona, which took 10 of its 19 matchups with the Dodgers a year ago.
The Dodgers raced out to a 5-0 lead after plating a run in the first, two in the third and two more in the fifth.
Puig smacked a one-out single in the first, moved to second on an Adrian Gonzalez walk two batters later and scored on Andre Ethier's base hit to right center.
Puig's RBI single and Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the third made it 3-0. Mike Baxter grounded into a double play to bring home a run in the fifth and Juan Uribe followed with a run-scoring double for LA's five-run cushion.
"They were pretty timely with their hitting," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson. "When they got pressure on us they did a good job this series of getting them in."
Puig's RBI double in the sixth and Gordon's sacrifice fly in the seventh increased the spread to 7-0.
Mark Trumbo's RBI single in the eighth finally got Arizona on the board, while Martin Prado's two-run base hit and Trumbo's two-run shot in the ninth cut the deficit to 7-5.
Kenley Jansen, though, struck out Gerardo Parra to end the game. Jansen was the eighth Los Angeles pitcher.
"We let them back in the game and had to use Kenley," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "We walked seven guys the last four innings. You don't play like this and win. At the end of the day, it's a win, but kind of a frustrating one."
