Arenado and Rockies take down Diamondbacks
Apr 6, 2014 - 7:22 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Arenado hit a pair of solo homers, drove in three and the Colorado Rockies came back from an early deficit to dispatch the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4, in the middle tilt of a three-game set at Coors Field.Michael Cuddyer added a two-run dinger, D.J. LeMahieu knocked in a pair and Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Pacheco each had an RBI for the Rockies, who have won three of their last four.
Charlie Blackmon, after going 6-for-6 in the home opener win for the Rockies on Friday, singled in his first at-bat Saturday and finished 3-for-4 with a run scored in the win.
"You can't get too caught up with the results after three, four, five games so just stay the course," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss of Arenado's start to the season. "He's showing signs of maturity, but it's a great way to bust out."
Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa was the victim of a high pitch count and allowed four runs -- three earned -- over 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks in his second start of the season.
Tommy Kahnle (1-0) worked 1 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit in relief of De La Rosa to pick up the win.
Mark Trumbo homered for the fourth time on the young season, a two-run shot in the top of the third. Martin Prado went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the setback, Arizona's fourth straight and seventh out of its first eight games.
Paul Goldschmidt's 26-game hitting streak that dated back to last season was snapped as the slugger finished 0-for-2 with two walks for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona's Brandon McCarthy (0-1), also making his second start of 2014, surrendered six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk over six innings.
"Honestly, we keep talking about it's early, it's early, but we have to pick it up right now," said Arizona catcher Miguel Montero.
Prado plated Goldschmidt with a double in the top half of the first and Chris Owings scored on a Justin Morneau fielding error off the bat of McCarthy in the next inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead after two.
Trumbo kept the momentum going in the third with a two-run shot to right following a Prado single.
McCarthy kept the Rockies bats off-balance until the home half of the fourth. Cuddyer pounded a two-run blast to right-center to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. Arenado then followed a Morneau groundout with his first solo shot of the night to make it a one-run game.
LaMahieu and Gonzalez each had two-out singles that plated runs, with Gonzalez's poke scoring LaMahieu and giving the Rockies a 5-4 edge.
Arenado hit his second long ball of the night in the bottom half of the sixth and LaMahieu added a sacrifice fly an inning later to increase the cushion.
Following a Morneau double in the bottom of the eighth, Arenado and Pacheco each followed with RBI doubles to close the scoring. LaTroy Hawkins posted a hitless ninth to close out the victory.

Blackmon tied a club record set by Juan Pierre for hits in consecutive days with nine ... Colorado had nine hits to just six for Arizona ...
