Puig's homer lifts Dodgers past Diamondbacks
Apr 21, 2014 - 12:18 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homer to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of a three-game set.Carl Crawford added an RBI triple for the Dodgers, who saw starter Josh Beckett allow one hit over five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Jamey Wright (1-0) earned the win in relief of Beckett, and Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth to nail down his seventh save of the season.
"I've done a decent job my last couple of outings," said Beckett. "There is always room for improvement. I need to work on my spots."
Eric Chavez knocked in the only run for the Diamondbacks, who only managed three hits. Arizona starter Josh Collmenter (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over six innings with six strikeouts.
Dee Gordon singled after Wright struck out, then Crawford chased him home with a triple to open the scoring in the top of the sixth.
Hanley Ramirez popped up in the next at-bat and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson chose to walk Adrian Gonzalez in order to let Puig beat them.
Puig watched the first fastball from Collmenter sail over the plate for a strike and then unloaded on the second pitch with a laser to left-center field to increase the cushion to 4-0.
"We did the right thing putting Gonzalez on," said Gibson. "Collmenter made a mistake and Puig made him pay. The pitch was more over the middle of the plate than he wanted it to be and he hit it out of the park."
Puig acknowledged after the game that Arizona made a good decision with the free pass to Gonzalez.
"They did what they had to do," said Puig. "The manager made the right call. (Collmenter) threw me a fastball and I was preparing for that pitch. It felt great hitting the ball so hard."
Wright allowed a single to Paul Goldschmidt and a walk to Miguel Montero to leadoff the top of the seventh which spelled the end of his day. Chris Perez got Aaron Hill to flyout to left for the first out of the inning, then Chavez came up and clubbed one over Crawford's head in left to cut the deficit to 4-1 and put runners on second and third.
Mark Trumbo and Tony Campana each struck out and Perez escaped the jam. Arizona didn't threaten in the final two innings as the Diamondbacks lost to LA for the seventh time in eight chances this season.
