Phillies rally to beat Diamondbacks

Apr 27, 2014 - 6:40 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere singled in the go-ahead run to cap a four-run eighth inning and help the Philadelphia Phillies come from behind to take a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Cody Asche drove in two runs on a pinch-hit double during the big frame. Carlos Ruiz went 3-for-4, including an RBI single in the eighth, as the Phillies won for the fifth time in seven games.

Phillies starter Cliff Lee was knocked around for five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits through six innings. Jeff Manship (1-0) picked up the win, despite walking two and allowing a hit in one inning.

Jonathon Papelbon picked up his seventh save of the season with the help of a challenge. Martin Prado attempted to steal second on a ball thrown in the dirt and was initially called safe, but the call was overturned as he came off the base when Chase Utley tagged him.

Cody Ross had two hits and three RBI and A.J. Pollock went 3-for-5 and drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Paul Goldschmidt scored once and had an RBI.

Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo hurled 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Trevor Cahill (1-5) suffered the loss and blown save after allowing three runs in the eighth.

"I think I was just overthrowing," Cahill said. "It's embarrassing. Bronson threw a great game and I should be able to come in and get three outs without letting them take the lead back, especially with a three-run lead."

Prado dropped a fly ball, allowing Ryan Howard to reach base to start the eighth. Marlon Byrd was then walked and Domonic Brown singled to load the bases. Ruiz brought Howard home with a single to right and two batters later Asche, in a pinch-hit role, doubled down the right field line.

Revere then popped up to shallow center, which scored Ruiz, as Pollock couldn't make the diving catch. Arizona got out of the inning after intentionally walking Utley and getting Howard to flyout.

"They had an error and then we put some hits together and the guys clutched up with the men on base," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of the eighth- inning rally. "The guys hung in there and gritted it out. It was a good character game for us."

In the bottom of the ninth Prado led off with a single, however, he was cut down at second on the aforementioned attempted steal. Papelbon then struck out Goldschmidt and got Miguel Montero to flyout to left to seal the victory.

Philadelphia was held scoreless until the seventh when Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled down the left field line to plate Ruiz. Revere sent Gwynn to third with a single and a groundout by Jimmy Rollins brought home another run.

Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly and Ross singled in a run in the opening inning.

Arizona picked up another run in the second on a one-out triple from Pollock. Chris Owings hit a leadoff single and scored on Pollock's hit. Pollock, however, was thrown out at home by Rollins as he attempted to score on a Prado grounder.

The Diamondbacks continued to roll in the third scoring two more on a Ross single for a 5-0 cushion.

Game Notes

Lee has allowed three or fewer earned runs in nine of his last 11 appearances ... The Phillies left 11 men on base, while going 6-for-14 with runners in scoring position ... Arizona went 3-for-10 with RISP and stranded eight runners ... Pollock was a home run shy of the cycle.
