Chavez's HR leads D-Backs over Dodgers

May 19, 2014 - 12:29 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Chavez hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Cody Ross homered for the first time since dislocating and fracturing his right hip last August and Chris Owings and A.J. Pollock each had three hits for the Diamondbacks, who won the last two games of the three-game series to finish off a 3-3 homestand.

Arizona had set franchise records for runs scored, hits in a nine-inning game and extra-base hits in an 18-7 win on Saturday.

"The thing about last night's game is if you don't play well today, it doesn't really mean anything," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson.

Chavez homered on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the fifth inning, sending an 88 mph fastball from Dodgers starter Dan Haren into the right-field seats to give the Diamondbacks a 5-3 lead.

He entered the game an inning earlier for starting third baseman Martin Prado, who experienced blurry vision in his left eye. Prado said he would see an eye doctor on Monday "just to make sure everything's fine."

"Fortunately for the team (Chavez) got a great at-bat and hit a homer and helped the team win," said Prado.

Adrian Gonzalez had a two-run homer and Hanley Ramirez added a solo blast for the Dodgers, who have dropped three of their last four.

"In this ballpark you have to be able to put runs on the board and we just didn't do it," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.

Josh Collmenter (2-2) picked up the win in 5 1/3 innings and Haren (5-2) took the loss after giving up 10 hits. Addison Reed pitched around a Scott Van Slyke single in the ninth inning to pick up his 12th save.

Ramirez lined a 2-2 pitch into the left-field seats with two outs in the first inning for his sixth homer of the season.

Ross doubled and scored in the second inning for Arizona and Gonzalez's homer in the third plated Ramirez for a 3-1 Dodgers lead.

Arizona tied the score with a run in the third and fourth inning. Gerardo Parra singled to lead off the third, went to second on Haren's wild pitch and scored on Owings' single and Ross led off the fourth with his first homer of the season.
