Sandoval and Giants slip past Diamondbacks
Jun 22, 2014 - 7:08 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Sandoval had three hits and drove in two runs and Hunter Pence smacked his 11th homer of the season in the San Francisco Giants' 6-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.Pence and Buster Posey each had a pair of hits and runs scored for San Francisco, which had lost a season-high six straight games heading into Saturday's middle installment of the three-game set from Chase Field. Tyler Colvin drove in a season-high three runs.
Ryan Vogelsong (5-3) didn't have his best stuff, earning the win despite allowing four runs on five hits in just five innings of work.
Aaron Hill went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Arizona, which suffered yet another setback with Brandon McCarthy (1-10) on the hill. McCarthy was charged with five runs on 10 hits in five innings, as the D-backs fell to 2-14 when he starts this season.
"They hit (McCarthy) hard in the first two innings, seven hits in the first two innings," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "Just wasn't our night."
The Giants batted around in the first inning, plating three runs but leaving the bases loaded. Consecutive singles by Pence and Posey set up Sandoval's RBI single. Three batters later, Colvin came up with the bases juiced and scored a pair with a single to left-center.
"Colvin had the big hit," said Pence. "That was huge for us."
Ehire Adrianza was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases, but Vogelsong grounded into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
Sandoval struck again in the second inning, following Posey's two-out double with an RBI base knock to make it 4-0.
Arizona cut the deficit in half in the home half, however, with Miguel Montero and David Peralta each connecting on RBI doubles.
Colvin's RBI groundout in the top of the fifth made it 5-2, but Arizona put two more runs across in the home half to pull within a run. Jordan Pacheco's double preceded walks to Didi Gregorius and Paul Goldschmidt, setting up Hill's two-run single to right. Hill was thrown out at second on the play, ending the inning.
Pence's solo homer in the top of the sixth resulted in the final margin.
Arizona threatened in the ninth inning against Sergio Romo, who got Goldschmidt to line out to right with runners on second and third to record his 21st save.
Game Notes
Giants center fielder Angel Pagan missed his fifth straight game with lower back pain ... Vogelsong is unbeaten in his last five road starts (3-0) ... San Francisco outhit Arizona, 12-9 ... Giants first baseman Michael Morse left in the fifth inning with back tightness.
