Goldschmidt powers Diamondbacks past Cubs
Jul 20, 2014 - 4:15 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer among his three hits, drove in three and scored three times to fuel Arizona's 9-3 victory over the Cubs in the middle test of a three-game set.Miguel Montero hit safely twice and also collected three RBI for the Diamondbacks, while Aaron Hill and Ender Inciarte both crossed home twice.
Mark Trumbo and Gerardo Parra also drove in a run each to back Wade Miley (6- 6), who gave up three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.
"The offense picked me up big time early in the game," said Miley. "That kind of helped me get through the rest of it. ... The offense found lightning."
Welington Castillo homered, with Starlin Castro and Mike Olt adding an RBI apiece for Chicago, which has dropped four in a row and nine of 11.
Travis Wood (7-9) was charged with seven runs -- five earned -- on eight hits with four walks in 5 1/3 frames.
The hosts rallied to go ahead for good in a productive fifth frame.
Inciarte began the inning with a ground-rule double and Hill and Goldschmidt walked to load the bases. Trumbo's liner failed to advance any runner, but Montero cleared the bases with a double to make it 4-3. Martin Prado lined out, but Olt threw wild trying to double off Montero, who went to third and scored as Parra followed with a base hit to left.
"The last walk can't happen," Wood said of the inning. "(Then I) threw a pitch to Montero that kind of sat there and he made me pay for it. That is what he is there to do."
Arizona collected two more in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, Goldschmidt's double dropped just in front of Chris Coghlan in left to score one, then Trumbo followed with an RBI base hit.
Hill doubled ahead of Goldschmidt's shot to left center which provided the final six-run margin for the Diamondbacks.
Chicago jumped on the board in the first inning, as three straight one-out singles -- the last from Castro -- brought in the game's opening run.
Wood loaded the bases in the home half by giving up a single and two walks, but Prado flied out to end the threat.
Arizona responded in the home third, as Goldschmidt singled with one away and came around on a Montero single compounded by an Arismendy Alcantara fielding error.
The Cubs moved back in front in the fourth. Castillo led off with his seventh homer of the season, then Junior Lake tripled and scored on an Olt fly to right.
