Walters' HR in 9th lifts Indians past D-backs
Aug 14, 2014 - 2:58 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Walters' home run in the bottom of the ninth inning provided the Cleveland Indians with a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader.Randall Delgado (1-3) took the mound and struck out Lonnie Chisenhall to start the home ninth, but Walters drove a 1-2 fastball over the right-field wall for his fourth home run of the season.
Cody Allen (4-2) earned the win after tossing a scoreless ninth. Starter Trevor Bauer tossed eight strong innings, giving up just two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.
"It's probably right up there as one of my best outings," said Bauer. "I was able to command the ball and use the center of the plate early."
Michael Brantley hit a two-run single and Tyler Holt had his first major- league hit and finished 2-for-3 for the Indians, who won their third straight game.
Aaron Hill drove in a run and Miguel Montero doubled for Arizona, which dropped its last two games. Starter Vidal Nuno allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 frames.
Josh Tomlin will take the hill for Cleveland in the conclusion of Wednesday's doubleheader and will be countered with Arizona's Andrew Chafin, who will be making his major-league debut.
Both pitchers were solid early on. Nuno struck out the side in the second and fanned five of the first six batters he faced, while Bauer did not allow a hit until the sixth.
Jake Lamb walked to open the frame and Xavier Paul's liner to right ended Bauer's no-hitter. Lamb scored after Jordan Pacheco grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Ender Inciarte singled up the middle and stole second, but was left stranded.
The Indians responded in the home half. Walters opened the frame with a single to left. Two batters later, Jason Kipnis' base hit to right moved Walters to third. Kipnis advanced to second on right fielder's David Peralta's throwing error.
After Mike Aviles popped out, Brantley singled under the glove of second baseman Aaron Hill to bring in Walters and Kipnis for a 2-1 score. Carlos Santana ended Nuno's outing with a double to left. Evan Marshall took the mound and induced an inning-ending groundout from Yan Gomes.
"Brantley just put the ball in play," said Nuno. "Part of the game is just inches and we couldn't make that play."
Mark Trumbo singled with one out in the seventh, moved to third on Montero's double and scored on Hill's groundout to make it a 2-2 game.
Game Notes
Inciarte and Trumbo extended their hitting streaks to 11 and eight games, respectively ... Bauer faced 16 batters before giving up a hit ... Cleveland went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while Arizona went 0-for-4.
