Giants blank D-backs
Sep 11, 2014 - 5:48 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Vogelsong pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to help the San Francisco Giants to a 5-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.Vogelsong walked a season-high five batters but allowed just two hits to help the Giants win for the eighth straight time at home. Jean Machi (7-1) finished the seventh inning to get the win.
D-backs starter Josh Collmenter matched his counterpart, tossing six scoreless innings, but Arizona's bullpen failed to match his success. Oliver Perez (3-4) was charged with three runs in one-third of an inning to absorb the loss.
Arizona fell to 2-7 on its 10-game road trip
Hunter Pence drew a walk to start the seventh and after two failed bunt attempts, Gregor Blanco ripped a grounder down the right-field line. Alfredo Marte fumbled the ball out in right field, allowing Pence to score the game's first run without a throw.
"Collmenter was phenomenal tonight," praised Pence. "Perez was pretty nasty, I hadn't faced him all year. I just tried to battle. Blanco had a great at-bat."
Brandon Crawford followed by chopping a grounder to first and beating out Mark Trumbo's flip to Perez covering first, putting runners on the corners.
After Evan Marshall replaced Perez on the mound, pinch-hitter Matt Duffy laced a double to right to add an insurance run. Crawford came home on a wild pitch, and Angel Pagan hit a sac fly to left to make it 4-0.
"They're playing well," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson. "They got some breaks. They kept pressing the issue and we didn't respond."
Pablo Sandoval doubled to right in the eighth inning and scored three batters later on a Travis Ishikawa single.
Jake Lamb finished with both of Arizona's hits.
