D-backs hold off Padres
Sep 15, 2014 - 5:21 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius both had two hits and knocked in a run as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 8-6 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Chase Field.Arizona scored five in the third to grab the lead and three in the eighth to create some breathing room.
San Diego had closed to within a run when they loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Will Harris struck out Rymer Liriano and pinch-hitter Tommy Medica to preserve the D-backs' 5-4 lead.
Gregorius hit an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning.
The Padres scored two runs in the ninth and had the go-ahead run at the plate, but Addison Reed got Cameron Maybin on a grounder to second base for the final out.
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill lasted only four innings. He gave up four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Zeke Spruill (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings for his first major league win.
"Probably the biggest (day) I've had besides the one when I was called up," Spruill said.
San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne (3-7) suffered his fourth straight losing decision after being tagged for five runs -- three earned -- on six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
"This is a learning experience for so many players and we're seeing this first-hand in September," Padres manager Bud Black said.
The D-backs erased a 2-0 deficit in the third. Owings singled home Gregorius with two outs and stole second before A.J. Pollock walked. Mark Trumbo knocked in a run with a base hit and Pollock scored when no one covered home after Trumbo got caught in a rundown.
Left fielder Cory Spangenberg then dropped Miguel Montero's fly ball, allowing Trumbo to come around. Montero reached second on the error and scored on an Aaron Hill single.
The Padres got two runs back in the fourth on a Spangenberg groundout and a Cahill wild pitch.
Game Notes
San Diego's Seth Smith snapped an 0-for-20 with an RBI single in the third ... The teams combined to go 10-for-31 with runners in scoring position.
