Braves use homers to edge Brewers
Apr 2, 2014 - 5:02 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Heyward hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth and Freddie Freeman added a pair of solo shots as the Atlanta Braves edged the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-2, in the second game of their season- opening three-game series.Carlos Gomez sent Alex Wood's first offering off the black backdrop beyond the center-field wall, but Atlanta's young 23-year-old starter settled down after allowing two more baserunners in that first inning.
Wood (1-0) wound up allowing five hits and three walks while fanning five over seven innings. His counterpart, Kyle Lohse (0-1), also went seven frames but took the loss having surrendered three runs on five hits.
"He threw a nice ballgame," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Lohse despite serving up two home runs.
The Braves were shut out, 2-0, on Opening Day at Miller Park and had not scored against the Brewers in 22 innings before Heyward found the right-field seats in the fifth to give them a 2-1 lead.
Freeman, who was thrown out trying to score from first when Dan Uggla doubled into the left-field gap in the fourth, trotted around the bases in the sixth when he sent one down the right-field line and narrowly over the fence.
"It was a breaking ball down and he flicked it around the (foul) pole," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I don't know how he hit it.'
Two frames later, Freeman crushed a Zach Duke offering deep to right for the fifth multi-home run game of his career.
Gomez manufactured a run in the eighth when he walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on Aramis Ramirez's two-out single, but Atlanta got the run back in the ninth when Uggla doubled again and scored on an Andrelton Simmons sacrifice fly.
Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth to close out Atlanta's first win.
Game Notes
The Braves had lost nine of their previous 10 games at Miller Park ... Lohse struck out eight ... Freeman finished with three hits ... Ramirez and Jonathan Lucroy each had two hits for Milwaukee.
