Revere helps Phillies avoid sweep by Braves
Apr 18, 2014 - 12:25 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ben Revere's RBI single in the eighth inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a rain-shortened four-game series.Domonic Brown opened the eighth with a base hit and moved to second on Wil Nieves' sacrifice bunt. After Ryan Howard walked, Revere slapped a humpback liner to shallow center to bring Brown around. B.J. Upton's throw to the plate was offline allowing Brown to score easily.
Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. Starter A.J. Burnett scattered three hits and two walks while fanning five over seven scoreless innings.
Antonio Bastardo (2-1) earned the win after hurling a scoreless eighth.
Revere finished the game 3-for-4 and Chase Utley added two hits for the Phillies, who open a 10-game road trip starting in Colorado on Friday.
"We got a good team here from hitting, to the rotation, to the bullpen, so it's just one of those deals that we're going to keep fighting," Revere said, referring to the team's slow start to the season. "We'll come together and when we do, we'll be a tough team to beat."
Alex Wood (2-2) was the hard-luck loser on Thursday. The left-hander allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out seven over eight innings.
Tuesday's game in this series was rained out.
The Braves had an opportunity to get on the board in the top of the eighth. Gerald Laird opened the frame with a double and Wood attempted to bunt him to the third, but couldn't get it down and eventually struck out.
"He was terrific," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of Wood. "You eliminate that eighth inning, both offensively and pitching wise, he did a terrific job. Here's a kid that hadn't handled the bat very much and he gets a chance to help himself and move the runner up and we don't do that."
Jason Heyward followed with a line out to left and Upton popped up to end the threat.
Game Notes
Revere has three three-hit games this season ... Philadelphia was 1-for-3 with RISP ... Howard had a five-game hitting streak snapped ... Atlanta will open a three-game set with the Mets at Citi Field on Friday before returning home for a six-game homestand.
