Gattis, Braves take rubber match against Marlins

Apr 23, 2014 - 7:57 PM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Gattis' pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning lifted the Atlanta Braves over the Miami Marlins, 3-1, at Turner Field.

Gattis, hitting for center fielder Jordan Schafer, lined a 1-1 offering from reliever A.J. Ramos down the left field line to score Ramiro Pena and Dan Uggla with the go-ahead runs and help the Braves take two of three from the Marlins.

This was Gattis' second game-winning hit in the series. His 10th-inning two- run homer in the series opener lifted Atlanta to a 4-2 win.

Ramos came on for Mike Dunn to face Gattis. Dunn (1-3) was hit with the loss, getting charged with two runs on one hit. Striking out three and walking one in one inning of work.

Atlanta reliever David Carpenter (1-0) got the win after getting Casey McGahee to line out to right field to end a Miami threat in the top of the eighth with runners on first and second. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Jason Heyward finished with two of the seven hits for the Braves, who won four of their last six overall.

Christian Yelich extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an eighth-inning bunt single, as the Marlins failed to follow-up a three-game sweep of the Mariners over the weekend with another series win.

Atlanta starting pitcher Aaron Harang pitched into the seventh inning, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out a season-high 11 and walked just one as his ERA increased to 0.85 for the season.

Braves pitchers struck out 16 batters in a game that featured strong pitching all afternoon.

Harang was equaled by his counterpart, Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi. The right-hander allowed one unearned run on five hits, striking out seven and walking one in six innings.

The Braves broke the scoreboard in the fourth inning thanks to an error and miscue by the Marlins. Chris Johnson reached to lead off the inning on a throwing error by shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and then moved to second on a wild pitch charged to Eovaldi. Ryan Doumit followed with a single up the middle to plate Johnson without a throw.

"These are teams you can't make mistakes against," said Miami's Giancarlo Stanton. "There's no second chances versus teams like this."

Miami later got to Harang for a run in the sixth inning when Stanton's two-out blooper to no-man's land in shallow left-center scored Jeff Mathis with the tying run. Mathis began the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on Marcel Ozuna's two-out single.

Harang, who had allowed just two hits over the first five innings, got out of further trouble by striking out Garrett Jones to end the inning.

The right-hander walked the McGehee to lead off the seventh and then yielded a base hit to Derek Dietrich, prompting manager Fredi Gonzalez to go to reliever Jordan Walden, who responded by striking out the next three batters to get out of the jam.

"I thought we won the game in the seventh inning," said Gonzalez. "I know the eighth got hairy, but that seventh was a big inning to get out of."

Harang's previous best in strikeouts this season was nine on Apr. 8 at home against the Mets ... He has now struck out 33 batters in 31 2/3 innings this season ... Marlins pitchers struck out 12 Atlanta hitters.
