Final/10
Braves top Cubs on Freeman's single
May 10, 2014 - 4:04 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddie Freeman's game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game set.Jason Heyward walked to lead off the 10th against Wesley Wright (0-1) and then was rewarded with a steal after beating a throw into second following a pickoff attempt at first.
Justin Upton was then intentionally walked and Freeman slapped a base hit into center to bring home Heyward for his eighth career walk-off hit.
"I don't think he should intentionally walk people to get to someone on our team," Freeman said. "We finally had a great pitching game and we actually scored more runs than they did."
Freeman finished 3-for-4 for Atlanta, which had dropped eight of its last nine games coming in.
Braves starter Julio Teheran fired eight innings of one-hit ball, allowing just a leadoff homer to Mike Olt in the third. He struck out nine and walked two, but didn't register the win because Craig Kimbrel blew his second save of the season in the ninth.
Chris Coghlan led off with a single, advanced to second on Emilio Bonifacio's groundout and scored on Ryan Kalish's base hit into left to tie the game at 2-2.
Alex Wood (3-5) fired a scoreless 10th to notch the win.
Olt sent a 3-1 fastball over the heart of the plate into the seats in left-center to put the Cubs on the board in the third.
"I got one mistake and was able to do something with it. But other than that, he did a great job controlling the game and coming right at us," Olt said.
Atlanta plated a pair in the home third to take the lead.
Freeman and Evan Gattis hit two-out singles to put runners on the corners. Gattis moved to second on a Jason Hammel wild pitch and both scored on Chris Johnson's single through the hole on the left side of the infield.
Game Notes
The Braves were 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position, while the Cubs finished 1-for-3 ... Olt's homer was his seventh of the season ... Hammel fanned five and gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk over seven frames.
