Teheran, Gattis help Braves clobber Rockies
May 26, 2014 - 12:56 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran pitched six innings while Evan Gattis hit two home runs to lead the Atlanta Braves in a 7-0 win over the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game series.Teheran (4-3) gave up just four hits and a walk while striking out seven for the Braves, who have won six of eight. Justin Upton and Chris Johnson each hit a two-run homer.
Franklin Morales (3-4) was charged with five runs on five hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings for the Rockies, who have lost three of four.
Atlanta gave Teheran all the support he needed in the second inning when Gattis hit a solo shot to center with one out.
"It's great to get some pitches I can handle," said Gattis. "I had to battle in the first at-bat until I got one I wanted."
Gattis smacked his second blast of the game in the fourth, this one following an Upton walk, for a 3-0 lead.
Upton added a two-run homer of his own in the fifth, following a Freddie Freeman walk, for a 5-0 advantage.
Meanwhile, Teheran had stranded four runners on base in the first two innings, and didn't allow a man to reach base over the next three frames.
"We had some chances but we didn't come through," said Colorado third baseman Charlie Culberson. "He's a good pitcher and he made some good pitches."
Colorado managed to get men on first and second with two outs in the sixth, but Teheran struck out Wilin Rosario to end the frame.
Anthony Varvaro retired all six batters he faced over the next two innings, with Johnson's two-run homer in the eighth inning making it a 7-0 game.
Luis Avilan set the Rockies down in order in the ninth to finish the contest.
