Wood pitches Braves past Marlins

Sep 1, 2014 - 12:18 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Wood tossed eight scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Wood (10-10) matched a career high with 12 strikeouts while giving up just five hits and no walks.

"He had all the stuff today. He was locating it well," Braves center fielder B.J. Upton said of Wood. "He had every pitch in his arsenal. When he's got that going, he's tough."

Evan Gattis' homer provided the game's lone run and Phil Gosselin had three hits for the Braves, who have won four of their last five.

Donovan Solano had two of Miami's six hits and starter Nathan Eovaldi (6-10) lost his fourth start in a row after allowing nine hits and the lone run with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames.

In the second, Gattis drove a first-pitch fastball over the wall in left- center for his 21st homer of the season.

"I felt like I misplaced some fastballs," said Eovaldi. "I missed that one with Gattis right down the middle. That was the difference in the game."

Miami threatened in the sixth. Three straight singles from Eovaldi, Christian Yelich and Solano loaded the bases with one out. Wood recovered to strike out Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee and escape the frame unscathed.

Closer Craig Kimbrel came on to pitch the ninth. Solano's leadoff grounder was corralled at third by Chris Johnson, who fired to first just in time to get the out. After Stanton popped up to first, McGehee's grounder trickled into right for a two-out single.

Kimbrel, however, struck out pinch-hitter Garrett Jones to earn his 41st save of the season.

Game Notes

The Marlins were shut out for the first time in 61 games. It was the first time they failed to score since June 21 against the Mets ... The Braves tied the season series at 8-8 ... Wood also had 12 strikeouts in a 3-1 win over Washington on Aug. 10.
