Gattis' HR in 10th lifts Braves past Marlins
Sep 7, 2014 - 4:44 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Gattis smacked a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the 10th inning and the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins, 4-3, in the middle test of a three-game set.Gattis' homer was originally ruled a triple, but the umpires overturned the call following a review. Gattis launched a towering blast off Bryan Morris (7-1) that ricocheted off the facing of the home run sculpture and back onto the field of play.
Craig Kimbrel fired a 1-2-3 10th to notch his 43rd save of the year.
Gattis finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while starter Alex Wood allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over seven-plus innings for Atlanta, which had dropped four of its last six games coming in
"I feel good. Knock on wood," Wood joked. "I have to continue to keep doing my routine in between and stay on top of everything to pitch well down the stretch."
The Braves are tied with Milwaukee for the NL's second wild-card spot.
Casey McGehee tied the game in the eighth with a two-run single for the Marlins, who have lost nine of their last 13 games.
"We battled back, but offensively we were pretty quiet," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
The Braves opened the scoring with three runs in the fourth.
Justin Upton was hit by a pitch with one out and Gattis followed with a single. After Tommy La Stella struck out, Andrelton Simmons lined a base hit to center to plate Upton.
B.J. Upton was intentionally walked to load the bases for Wood, who ripped a single to center to plate Gattis and Simmons.
Miami got a run back in the home fourth and pushed across two more in the eighth to tie it.
McGehee worked a one-out walk in the fourth, advanced to second on Marcell Ozuna's groundout and scored on Jeff Baker's base hit up the middle.
Christian Yelich and Donovan Solano coaxed consecutive walks to start the eighth. Both runners moved up a base on Giancarlo Stanton's groundout and then scored on McGehee's single to center.
