Mets sweep fading Braves
Sep 21, 2014 - 9:46 PM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Recker was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored as the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves, 10-2, to sweep a three-game set.Ruben Tejada smacked a solo homer among his two hits and two RBI for the Mets, who had dropped four of five coming into the series. Jacob deGrom (9-6) struck out 10 and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and three walks over six innings to notch the win.
"We came in here, played good baseball and got three wins," Recker said.
Ervin Santana (14-10) surrendered five runs on six hits and two walks over five frames for Atlanta, which has lost eight of its last nine contests and was eliminated from playoff contention with Pittsburgh's 1-0 win over Milwaukee.
"We know we haven't played well, it's no secret. We had a long shot, but now we have no shot," Braves outfielder Justin Upton said.
The Mets raced out to a 5-0 lead after plating a run in each of the first two innings before adding three more in the fourth.
Matt den Dekker led off the game with a double to right, advanced to third on Wilmer Flores' fly out in foul territory and scored on Daniel Murphy's groundout.
Curtis Granderson began the second with a single and after Kirk Nieuwenhuis struck out, Recker's base hit put runners on the corners. Tejada lifted a sacrifice fly to center to push across Granderson.
Granderson worked a one-out walk in the fourth and Nieuwenhuis' double put runners at second and third. Granderson then came home on a passed ball and Nieuwenhuis scored on Recker's sacrifice fly. Tejada's solo shot to left gave New York its five-run cushion.
Upton's leadoff single in the fifth was the first hit off deGrom. He later came home on a fielding error and Emilio Bonifacio coaxed a bases-loaded walk to trim the gap to 5-2, but the Mets added on with a run in the sixth, another in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
Recker scored on a fielding error by catcher Christian Bethancourt on a deGrom sacrifice bunt attempt in the sixth and then came home on an errant pickoff attempt by Gus Schlosser in the eighth.
Nieuwenhuis hit an RBI double and Recker added a two-run double in the ninth to cap the scoring.
