Ortiz, Red Sox win series against Orioles
Apr 4, 2014 - 4:54 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz had three hits and an RBI as the Boston Red Sox clinched a series victory over the Baltimore Orioles with a 4-3 win on Thursday.Xander Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Jackie Bradley had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Red Sox, who won the last two games of the season-opening three-game set.
"Being able to take advantage of the opportunities when they are given to you feels good," said Bradley. "I'll take it and look forward to tomorrow."
Felix Doubront (1-0) gave up six hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Matt Wieters was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Delmon Young also drove in a run for the Orioles, who saw starter Wei-Yin Chen (0-1) give up four runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
"That's why they were the last team standing last year is because they pitched better than anyone else," said Baltimore manager Buck Showalter. "I don't think I'm telling anyone something they don't know. If you pitch well, you get to play extra games at the end of the year."
Boston jumped on top in the second inning, as Bogaerts led off with a single and moved to third when Daniel Nava followed with a base hit. Will Middlebrooks then hit into a 6-4-3 double play to plate Bogaerts for a 1-0 lead.
Bradley led off the third with a single, and was still there after the next two batters flied out. Ortiz, though, dropped a bloop single to left that Nelson Cruz missed on a dive, and Bradley raced all the way home for a 2-0 lead.
The Red Sox scored another run in the fourth on a David Ross RBI single, but the Orioles got two back in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-2 game.
Chris Davis led off with a double and moved to third on an Adam Jones groundout. Two batters later, Wieters punched an RBI double to right-center, and Young followed with a single to score Wieters.
In the sixth, Middlebrooks doubled with one out and later scored on a Bradley single to center for a 4-2 advantage.
Davis started the home sixth with a single and Wieters later singled off Brandon Workman to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch from Workman allowed Davis to cross the plate and make it a 4-3 game.
Chris Capuano pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for Boston and Junichi Tazawa worked around two singles in the eighth before Koji Uehara tossed a flawless ninth for his first save of the season.
