Orioles top Red Sox to win third straight

Apr 19, 2014 - 4:59 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Schoop went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday in the opener of a four-game set at Fenway Park.

Nelson Cruz had two RBI and Nick Markakis added a pair of doubles, one RBI and two runs scored for the Orioles, winners in three straight.

Chris Tillman (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks while fanning five to pick up the win. Brian Matusz allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings and Darren O'Day threw 1 1/3 scoreless frames to earn his first save of the season.

"Just being able to trot back on the field a couple times was a pretty cool feeling. It is nice to go out there and try to put up some zeroes behind Tilly, who pitched a pretty good ball game," Matusz said.

Brock Holt had two hits and an RBI while Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts and A.J. Pierzynski each drove in a run for the Red Sox, who had won two straight entering the contest.

John Lackey (2-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out six to absorb his second straight loss.

Baltimore wasted no time getting on the board as Adam Jones singled home Markakis. Markakis opened the game with a double down the left-field line. Boston challenged the call on the field, but the ruling was upheld. After the next two hitters were retired, Jones hit a chopper up the middle. Red Sox shortstop Bogaerts fielded the ball in shallow center, but was unable to get Jones at first.

"I personally thought it was foul, but they went and took a look at it so it must have caught some chalk," said Holt, who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket prior to the game.

The O's added three more in the third. After Schoop singled to open the frame, Markakis smacked a double into the right-field corner to bring Schoop around. Later, Chris Davis walked and Jones singled before Cruz dropped a base hit to shallow right-center to bring Markakis and Davis around.

The Red Sox broke through in the fourth when Holt singled home Carp, who opened the frame with a double.

Baltimore tacked on two more in the fifth inning. With two on and two outs, Wieters singled to right field to score Delmon Young. J.J. Hardy followed with a single to left to plate Cruz for a 6-1 edge.

Boston countered with a pair of runs in the home half to cut its deficit in half. Daniel Nava led off with a double before scoring on Pedroia's base hit to right. Tillman retired the next two hitters, but walked Bogaerts to put runners on first and second. Pierzynski then ripped a single to center to score Pedroia.

The sides traded runs in the seventh. Schoop doubled home Hardy in the top half and Bogaerts added an RBI single to plate Mike Napoli in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4.

Schoop's ninth inning double scored Steve Lombardozzi to account for the final difference.
