Final/13
Indians edge Orioles in 13 innings
May 23, 2014 - 6:26 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Santana's two-run double in the top of the 13th inning lifted the Cleveland Indians to their fourth straight win, an 8-7 decision over the Baltimore Orioles that kicked off a four-game series.Santana finished with two hits and Michael Bourn had three along with a run scored in Cleveland's second 13-inning triumph in as many days. The Indians rallied for an 11-10 verdict over Detroit on Wednesday.
They came back in this one as well, with Lonnie Chisenhall tying the contest at 6-6 with a pinch-hit solo home run in the eighth, then held on after Nick Markakis homered off Scott Atchison with one out in the bottom of the 13th.
Atchison retired the next two hitters, however, to notch his first save of the season, with Josh Outman (4-0) tossing two scoreless innings to earn the win.
"Tonight was in a lot of ways similar. We had to really dig deep. We made some mistakes but we outplayed them. As a result, we have a tired group," Indians manager Terry Francona said.
Ryan Flaherty had a three-run homer earlier for Baltimore and finished 2-for-5 in the loss, while Adam Jones collected three hits and scored once.
Both teams received strong work from their bullpens to keep the game even through the first three extra frames before Cleveland finally broke through against Troy Patton in the 13th.
Michael Brantley and Chisenhall greeted the left-hander with one-out singles and Patton walked Nick Swisher to load the bases. Brantley opted not to tag on a medium-range fly ball from Yan Gomes that Markakis caught down the right- field line, but Santana -- hitting just .146 coming in -- picked his teammate up with a hard smash inside the third-base bag to give the Tribe an 8-6 edge.
Markakis made it interesting by hammering Atchison's first-pitch curveball into the seats in Baltimore's half of the 13th, and Jones gave one a ride two batters later that Brantley hauled in near the warning track for the final out.
Justin Masterson, moved up a day with Indians scheduled starter Josh Tomlin forced to pitch in Wednesday's marathon, was tagged for five runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Aided by three double-play grounders, the last getting him out of a bases- loaded jam in the fourth, Masterson carried a shutout and a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. He retired two of the first three batters of the frame, then wilted as Baltimore's bats came alive.
A walk to Nelson Cruz was followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Steve Clevenger and J.J. Hardy that got the Orioles within one, with Flaherty following with a deep drive that cleared the scoreboard in right for a 5-3 advantage.
Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen served up Ryan Raburn's first homer of the season in the second inning and a triple to Brantley that plated Bourn in the third, then uncorked a wild pitch that put Cleveland up by a 3-0 count.
He settled down to keep the Indians off the board over the next three frames, but singles by Gomes and Santana placed men at the corners with one out in the seventh. After a grounder from David Murphy brought in Gomes, Mike Aviles chased Chen with a sharp single to left that forged a 5-5 tie.
The damage could have been greater if not for a leaping catch by Orioles left fielder David Lough, who scaled the wall to rob Asdrubal Cabrera of a would-be three-run homer.
Conversely, the Indians were let down by their defense as Baltimore moved back ahead in the bottom of the seventh, as errors by Cabrera and Santana led to a bases-loaded situation and Cruz's sac fly off Mark Lowe.
Chen was charged with five runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado was removed after 11 innings due to a right groin injury.
"It was more of a stiffness every time I started running or that first step. And it just kept getting worse," Machado said.
Game Notes
The Orioles suffered their first loss in five extra-inning games ... Masterson was making his second career start on three days rest. The other came in a 3-2 Cleveland win over Minnesota on Aug. 12, 2011, in which he received a 7 2/3-inning no-decision ... Atchison's only other save came while with the Red Sox on May 20, 2011 ... Preston Guilmet, recalled by the Orioles with reliever Tommy Hunter (groin) placed on the DL, threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the pen.
