Final/12
O's beat Red Sox in 12 innings
Jul 7, 2014 - 2:31 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - J.J. Hardy singled home David Lough in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox in the finale of a three-game set at Fenway Park.Lough tripled to center field off Edward Mujica (2-4) to open the 12th and Hardy followed with a grounder to left.
With one away in the bottom of the 12th, David Ortiz tried to stretch a one- hopper off the Green Monster into a double, but was thrown out at second.
Zach Britton earned his 14th save by striking out Mike Napoli to end the game. Brad Brach (4-0) picked up the win after tossing three scoreless innings.
"Coming out (of the series) with two wins was huge," said Brach. "It would have been tough if we hadn't won today. It was great going out and helping us get a win. It was a great weekend."
The Red Sox trailed 6-1 after Baltimore scored four runs in the seventh, but rallied with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning.
David Ross clubbed a solo home run to center field before RBI singles by Xander Bogaerts, Daniel Nava, Ortiz and Mike Napoli tied the game.
Boston center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made a leaping catch in the ninth to rob Manny Machado and save a run.
Red Sox starter Jake Peavy found himself in immediate hot water when the Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the first. He managed to wiggle out of trouble, fanning Delmon Young and retiring Hardy on a flyout to center.
Baltimore did get on the board on an error in the fourth.
Nelson Cruz was initially thrown out at second after lining a shot off the Green Monster, but the O's challenged and got the call overturned to a leadoff double. The third baseman Bogaerts then airmailed a throw to first after fielding a routine Young grounder, allowing Cruz to score.
The O's loaded the bases again in the sixth and went up 2-0 on Caleb Joseph's sacrifice fly.
Boston produced a run in the bottom of the inning. With men on the corners, Ortiz greeted reliever T.J. McFarland with an RBI single. McFarland, however, induced a double-play grounder from Napoli to preserve a lead that Baltimore extended against the Red Sox bullpen in the seventh.
The O's hit three consecutive singles off Burke Badenhop to begin the frame, with Cruz driving in Steve Pearce. Junichi Tazawa replaced Badenhop and gave up Hardy's two-run single to right field. Back-to-back singles by Machado and Ryan Flaherty brought in another run to make it 6-1.
"They strung some hits together. This is a very good-hitting lineup," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "They use the whole field."
