O's top Yanks in rain-shortened affair
Jul 14, 2014 - 5:48 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Davis smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees, 3-1, in a rain-shortened finale of a three-game set.The Yankees led 1-0 before the Orioles plated three runs in the fourth to surge ahead.
Nelson Cruz walked to begin the frame and Davis followed by lifting his opposite-field, two-run shot just over the low wall in left. J.J. Hardy then banged a double to left and scored with two outs when Jonathan Schoop slapped a base hit to right-center and give Baltimore a 3-1 advantage.
Kevin Gausman (4-2) retired the Yankees in order in the fifth before the rain came in the home half.
The game was called following a delay of 2 hours and 22 minutes.
"If the game would have been 10 minutes slower, we would never have got to that spot," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's unfortunate."
Gausman, who retired 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced, allowed four hits and struck out two in the first complete game of his career for the Orioles, who have won 10 of their last 13 games and head into the All-Star break atop the AL East for the first time since 1997.
"We may be in first place right now, but we still feel like we are hunting something," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Brett Gardner whacked a leadoff blast over the big wall in right to open the scoring in the first for New York, which has dropped three of its last four tilts heading into the All-Star break.
Yankees starter Chase Whitley (4-3) surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks over 3 2/3 frames in defeat.
