Jones homers twice as O's top Angels
Jul 22, 2014 - 5:56 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Jones hit a pair of two-run homers and Bud Norris pitched a gem in his return to the big leagues as the Baltimore Orioles topped the Los Angeles Angels, 4-2, on Monday.Norris (8-6) yielded just two runs -- one earned -- while striking out eight to earn the win. He was placed on the disabled list in late June with a strained right groin following a four-game win streak and lost his only time out since, a forgettable four-inning outing against the Nationals on July 9. Norris made a minor league start with Double-A Bowie before getting recalled to the majors.
"I felt comfortable before the game," Norris said. "I was locating my fastball pretty good and the changeup worked later in the game."
Norris has been dominant against the Angels, compiling a 4-0 record in his last five starts against them.
Nick Markakis added a pair of hits and two runs scored for Baltimore, which improved to 2-2 on a 10-game road trip.
Matt Shoemaker (7-3) pitched well aside from the two home runs, matching a career-high with 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings on the mound.
"It was a tough loss to Matt," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "The few mistakes were to Jones. We just didn't get it done tonight."
It was 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Markakis' double sandwiched strikeouts by Jonathan Schoop and Steve Pearce. Jones stepped up and delivered the eventual game-winning homer out to left-center field.
Jones' second home run of the game traveled an estimated 443 feet. It was his longest blast of the season.
Earlier, Jones gave the O's an early 2-0 lead with his homer to left two batters after Markakis started the game with a single up the middle.
The Angels got one back in the home first on Josh Hamilton's RBI single. Later, Howie Kendrick led off the fourth with a ground-rule double to right and scored when Hank Conger singled to right.
Zach Britton came on in the ninth and was hit in the arm by an Erick Aybar grounder, but stayed in the game to pitch a 1-2-3 frame and pick up his 17th save.
