Bradley plays hero in 14th as Red Sox outlast White Sox
Apr 17, 2014 - 7:06 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jackie Bradley Jr.'s two-run double in the top of the 14th inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox to even the three-game set from U.S. Cellular Field.Chicago was out of pitchers, so infielder Leury Garcia (0-1) took the hill and retired the first two batters he faced in the 14th but walked Daniel Nava and Jonathan Herrera, setting up Bradley's drive to the wall in right field.
"There were some options there, but at that point Leury became the best option," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said of turning to Garcia in the 14th.
Chris Capuano (1-0) got the first two outs in the home half of the 14th, and Burke Badenhop took the hill to finish it and record his first save of the season for Boston, which had lost three straight.
Dustin Pedroia had two hits and three runs scored for the Red Sox, who hit just 6-for-44 as a team and 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Clay Buchholz started and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits while striking out six over six innings.
"We had multiple opportunities with men on base offensively and we're still grinding away," Boston manager John Farrell remarked. "We didn't come out of our approach, we took base on balls when they were issued, and thankfully we walk away from here with a win."
Alexei Ramirez homered for Chicago and extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying him with Frank Thomas (1996) for the longest season-opening streak in franchise history.
Conor Gillaspie, Adrian Nieto and Tyler Flowers all had two hits in defeat.
The White Sox took a 3-1 lead on Ramirez's two-run homer in the sixth. Adam Dunn walked and later scored on Ramirez's blast to left.
The Red Sox scored once in the eighth and ninth to force extras. In the eighth, Scott Downs walked David Ortiz before handing the ball over to Jake Petricka, who walked Jonny Gomes. Donnie Veal came in and got Grady Sizemore to ground into a fielder's choice, but A.J. Pierzynski's sacrifice fly cut the gap to one. Boston left the bases loaded.
Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts worked consecutive walks to begin the ninth. Matt Lindstrom came in from the bullpen and gave up an infield single to Gomes. Sizemore's sacrifice fly tied the game.
The Red Sox took the lead in the 11th. Daniel Webb walked Pedroia and hit Bogaerts with a pitch. After Ortiz grounded into a fielder's choice, Gomes plated Pedroia with a sacrifice fly.
Chicago got the run back in the bottom half to extend the game. With Edward Mujica pitching, Jordan Danks walked, stole second, advanced to third on Ramirez's groundout and raced home on Flowers' single to center.
Earlier, both teams put a run across in the first inning. Bogaerts hit an RBI single to start it, and the White Sox responded in the home half when Adam Eaton scored on Ryan Roberts' throwing error.
Game Notes
The Red Sox were without first baseman Mike Napoli, who left Tuesday's contest in the ninth inning with a dislocated finger ... Pedroia returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous two games with inflammation in his left wrist ... Boston left 16 men on base while Chicago left 10 ... Chicago starter John Danks gave up one run on three hits with four walks over six innings.
