Porcello, Tigers take down Red Sox
May 18, 2014 - 6:21 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Rick Porcello worked eight solid innings, with Miguel Cabrera contributing a solo homer among his three hits and two RBI, as Detroit claimed a 6-1 victory over Boston in the middle test of a three-game series from Fenway Park on Saturday.Ian Kinsler, Torii Hunter, Alex Avila and Rajai Davis each added an RBI for the Tigers, who have taken the first two in the set and five straight overall.
Porcello (7-1) gave up a run on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk, and set a new personal record with his sixth straight victory.
A Xander Bogaerts solo homer was the only run for the Red Sox, losers in three straight and four of their last five. Mike Napoli collected three hits in defeat.
John Lackey (5-3) was tagged for nine hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 5 1/3 frames.
"[With] the way Porcello has been pitching all season and again tonight, early runs, we find ourselves behind, and one real scoring threat, in the fourth inning, that we come up empty," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "That was pretty much the story here tonight."
Victor Martinez began the second with a base hit, Austin Jackson walked, Nick Castellanos singled and Martinez scored on an Avila fielder's choice grounder.
Cabrera's two-out shot in the third reached the seats around Pesky's Pole in right for a 2-0 Detroit edge, and the Tigers gained more separation in the fifth.
Kinsler doubled with one away, then Hunter doubled him home and Cabrera's single plated Hunter to make it 4-0. Jackson hit a two-out double to left, but Lackey recovered to retire Castellanos on a pop to first.
Bogaerts' liner over the Green Monster began the home half of the fifth, but Detroit extended its lead in the following frame to 6-1 on an RBI double from Davis, and Kinsler sacrifice fly.
Porcello followed by setting the side down in order in the final three innings of his outing. He retired 11 in a row after Dustin Pedroia's one-out hit in the fifth.
Phil Coke worked around a Napoli hit in the ninth and preserved the winning margin.
