Indians topple Red Sox thanks to Bourn

Jun 4, 2014 - 4:40 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Bourn struck the go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Cleveland took down Boston, 5- 3, in the middle test of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Lonnie Chisenhall added two hits with an RBI and Michael Brantley knocked in the other run for the Indians, winners of five straight including the first two in this set.

Nick Hagadone (1-0) recorded the final two outs of the seventh, and fanned three over 1 1/3 scoreless relief frames for the win. Cody Allen turned in a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Xander Bogaerts finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Red Sox, who have lost two in a row since winning seven straight. Dustin Pedroia and Jonathan Herrera contributed an RBI each in defeat.

Jake Peavy (1-3) surrendered all five runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.

"Jake settled down...and kept the game under control," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of his starter.

Scott Atchison surrendered back-to-back doubles to Bogaerts and Pedroia in the seventh which pulled Boston even at 3-3. David Ortiz was given a free pass, and two batters later Hagadone entered and fanned A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Hassan.

However, the Tribe countered in the home half to take the lead. Peavy walked David Murphy, Yan Gomes singled, and both runners moved up on a Mike Aviles fielder's choice grounder ahead of Andrew Miller giving up the winning two-run double from Bourn.

"I just tried to get my hands inside (the pitch)...and hit it hard," Bourn said of his go-ahead hit.

Craig Breslow got himself into a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the eighth, but Burke Badenhop needed just two pitches to kill that rally with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play from Gomes.

Allen had no trouble in a perfect ninth to lock down the win.

Cleveland gave starter T.J. House some breathing room early, scoring three times in the opening inning. Peavy failed to retire the first five batters he faced, and thanks to five consecutive singles, fell behind 2-0. Ryan Raburn then hit into a double play but the effort managed to score another run before Murphy fanned.

Bogaerts put the Sox on the board in the third, with a one-out homer to left, and the visitors crept within 3-2 in the sixth. Jonny Gomes walked, then following a Pierzynski fly out and Hassan strikeout, Jackie Bradley was hit by Marc Rzepczynski and Herrera's base hit plated Gomes.

Game Notes

House ended up allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 innings ... Prior to the contest, Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman was suspended six games, pending an appeal, for throwing behind Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria last weekend.
