Final
Buchholz, Red Sox top Mariners
Jun 26, 2014 - 5:26 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz belted a two-run homer and had three RBI, and Clay Buchholz had a successful return from the disabled list, as the Boston Red Sox edged the Seattle Mariners, 5-4, to avoid a three-game sweep.Buchholz (3-4), who hadn't pitched since May 26 because of a hyperextended left knee, allowed four runs on seven hits through 7 1/3 innings.
"He really settled in from the third inning on," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Buchholz. "He pitched comfortably and was extremely efficient and gave us a lift."
Koji Uehara put two men on base in the ninth, but secured his 16th save.
Daniel Nava went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brock Holt had a pair of hits and scored twice for Boston, which will head east for the start of a three-game set in New York against the AL East rival Yankees.
Hisashi Iwakuma (5-4) surrendered eight hits and five runs over four-plus innings. Kyle Seager, Mike Zunino and Brad Miller homered for the Mariners, whose five-game winning streak was stopped.
Miller's homer to right off Buchholz leading off the eighth brought the Mariners within a run.
Seager singled and Logan Morrison walked with one out in the ninth. Zunino struck out. Uehara raced to the base to take the toss from Holt to retire Dustin Ackley for the final out.
Ortiz homered to right with Dustin Pedroia aboard in the opening inning, but Seager led off the home second with a blast over the wall in right-center. Morrison then singled and Zunino followed with a shot to left for a 3-2 margin.
Nava singled in a run in the third, and Ortiz's base hit to right plated Holt later in the inning and provided a 4-3 edge for the visitors.
"It's tough to get a lot of guys out when they're running the pitch count up early," Zunino said of Iwakuma's performance. "It was not his usual night with that."
Holt scored on Ortiz's double-play grounder in the fifth.
Game Notes
When Buchholz was activated from the 15-day disabled list, the Red Sox opened a roster spot by designating pitcher Chris Capuano for assignment ... Tom Wilhelmsen threw three scoreless innings and Brandon Maurer two for the Mariners ... Seager had three of Seattle's eight hits.
