White Sox beat sliding Red Sox again
Jul 9, 2014 - 4:41 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Conor Gillaspie hit the tie-breaking two-run homer among his three hits and scored twice, as Chicago claimed an 8-3 victory over Boston in the second edition of a four-game series from Fenway Park."He can put it in play and usually he puts it in play hard," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura of Gillaspie. "Even going into this year, he felt out of Spring Training that he understood what it takes to hit here and he has been showing it. You get it in the zone and he puts a good swing on it."
Jose Abreu finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored once for the White Sox, winners of three straight and five of their last six.
Alejandro De Aza added a pair of hits and drove in two to back 5 2/3 innings from John Danks (8-6), who yielded eight hits and three runs despite four walks.
Mike Napoli collected three hits, scored once and drove in a run for the Red Sox, who have seven of their last eight games. Dustin Pedroia contributed two hits, an RBI and run scored in the setback.
Brandon Workman (1-3) gave up eight hits and five runs -- three earned -- in his losing seven-inning stint.
Abreu's single began the White Sox sixth, then after Adam Dunn fanned looking, Gillaspie put Chicago ahead to stay when he wrapped a ball around the Pesky Pole in right to give the visitors a 5-3 edge.
Dayan Viciedo walked to start the ninth and his pinch runner, Moises Sierra, moved to second on Burke Badenhop's wild pick-off throw and scored on a De Aza triple to center. Gordon Beckham's double off Craig Breslow scored De Aza and the ChiSox led 7-3. Abreu was then given a free pass, then Paul Konerko struck a pinch-hit RBI ground-rule double to complete the three-run frame.
"Any time you give extra outs, you're asking for trouble," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "Can't deny we've given up extra outs that have come back to haunt us over the past five games."
Eric Surkamp worked around a Pedroia single in a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
In the second, Chicago loaded the bases with none out on a walk to Dunn and singles from Alexei Ramirez and Gillaspie, then Dunn scored on Napoli's error and Ramirez came in on a De Aza double-play grounder.
Gillaspie doubled with one away in the fourth and came home on De Aza's two- out single, but the hosts tied the score in the fifth. Brock Holt started with a triple and came home when Pedroia followed with a double. Napoli doubled to left to score Pedroia two batters later, and after a Jonny Gomes base hit left runners on the corners, Xander Bogaerts dumped a single to left for a 3-3 game.
