Red Sox win in 10 to earn series split
Jul 11, 2014 - 3:09 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pinch-hitter Mike Carp connected on a run- scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, on Thursday.Daniel Nava walked to begin the 10th and advanced to second on a Mookie Betts sacrifice bunt before Ronald Belisario (3-6) intentionally walked Stephen Drew.
Carp, who was activated from the disabled list at the beginning of the week, then ended an 0-for-19 streak with a grounder to left, scoring Nava, who slid in ahead of the throw.
The Red Sox concluded this four-game set with consecutive walk-off wins to earn a split.
"The few hits that we did get and the walks when we got them, it was the timely hitting that was key," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
Boston went into the ninth ahead 3-1 after Boston ace Jon Lester outdueled Chicago lefty Jose Quintana, but Conor Gillaspie belted a pinch-hit, two-run homer off closer Koji Uehara.
The inning began with a play at first being overturned. Alexei Ramirez hit a slow grounder between first and second and initially lost a foot race with Uehara to the base. A challenge by Chicago resulted in a single for Ramirez, who scored on Gillaspie's one-out drive down the right-field line.
Gillaspie homered in each of the final three games of the series.
The White Sox had two men aboard with one out in the top of the 10th, but Andrew Miller (3-5) fielded two grounders back to the mound to keep the game tied.
The story early in the contest was Quintana, who held Boston without a baserunner through the first five frames.
Drew broke up the perfect game with a leadoff walk in the sixth and after David Ross drew a free pass, Jackie Bradley Jr. ended the no-hitter with an RBI single to right.
Quintana also had his scoreless streak snapped at a career-high 20 2/3 innings.
David Ortiz made it 3-1 with a two-out double to the gap in left-center field.
Adam Eaton opened the game with a single and scored on Jose Abreu's one-out double. The Cuban rookie smacked a liner over the head of left fielder Jonny Gomes that bounced off the Green Monster.
The White Sox threatened to extend their lead in the sixth, placing two men in scoring position. Lester, however, retired Moises Sierra on a foul popup to first for the final out.
"We had plenty of guys on base to be able to knock in and we didn't do it," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura.
