Iannetta lifts Angels over Red Sox
Aug 20, 2014 - 4:54 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Iannetta's ninth-inning RBI double snapped a tie and sent Los Angeles to a 4-3 victory over Boston in the second edition of a four-game set from Fenway Park.Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols also drove in a run apiece for the Angels, who have reeled off six wins in their last seven efforts, including two in a row to begin this series.
Joe Smith (5-1) tossed a scoreless eighth, then Huston Street left two on in the ninth while picking up his 10th save.
"The bullpen has been pitching a lot and they've really stepped up," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "Joe and Huston finished that game off and they really stuck it to them."
David Ortiz homered among his two hits, with Brock Holt and Mike Napoli adding an RBI each for the Red Sox, who stumbled to their third straight defeat and fourth in five games.
"There is some positives to take away from this game," said Boston manager John Farrell. "We got some good innings from the pitchers and we were able to create some opportunities offensively."
Koji Uehara (5-3) took the loss after being charged with the deciding run.
In a tie game, Uehara seemed to have the upper hand after retiring two straight Halos batters. But Brennan Boesch kept the ninth alive with a two-out ground-rule double, then scored when Iannetta added a two-base hit to give the Angels a 4-3 edge.
Street allowed a leadoff pinch-single to Yoenis Cespedes -- who moved up on a sacrifice -- then walked Ortiz intentionally after fanning Dustin Pedroia. He recovered to strike out Napoli and preserve the one-run margin.
Ortiz cleared the Green Monster with two away in the home first to put the Sox on the board, and it could have been 4-0 in the second, if not for Calhoun robbing Holt of a three-run homer by reaching over the low wall in right to end the inning. Mookie Betts and Christian Vazquez were aboard and poised to walk home if not for Calhoun's quick glove.
In the following frame, Calhoun singled in Iannetta, then came home on a Trout triple to put the visitors ahead. Pujols then barely beat out a sharp grounder to third which was saved from extra bases on a diving grab by Will Middlebrooks, but Trout was able to score for a 3-1 game.
Pedroia reached on a one-out single in the fifth, Ortiz walked, both advanced on a wild pitch and the former scored on a Napoli groundout. The Sox tied the game in their next turn at the plate, as Xander Bogaerts walked, moved to third on a single and scored on a Holt fly to center.
