Odorizzi, Rays blank Red Sox

Aug 31, 2014 - 5:46 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Odorizzi tossed seven dominant innings of one-hit ball, while Ben Zobrist drove in two runs, and Tampa Bay shut down Boston, 7-0, in the second edition of a four-game series.

Odorizzi (10-11) fanned seven and walked three over his 103-pitch outing, helping his club win for just the second time in their last six. Jeff Beliveau and Kirby Yates finished off the shutout with consecutive scoreless frames.

"It was simply better than (last start)," said Odorizzi. "I wanted to be unpredictable today and throw some offspeed pitches in counts I normally wouldn't."

Brandon Guyer finished with two hits and scored twice for the Rays, with James Loney, Logan Forsythe and Ryan Hanigan each driving in a run.

Allen Webster (3-3) was tagged in the loss for six runs and five hits with three walks over four-plus frames for the Red Sox, who couldn't maintain momentum from an 8-4 win in Friday's series opener.

Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia left the game in the second inning after absorbing an elbow to the face from Forsythe. Red Sox manager John Farrell said after the contest that Pedroia, despite exiting the field under his own power, showed symptoms consistent with a concussion and will see a local doctor for further evaluation.

"He's got some symptoms that are consistent with a concussion," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "We'll take every precaution necessary with Dustin."

Tampa loaded the bases twice in the home second and came up with three runs. Evan Longoria was plunked to start and came in on a Loney double. Guyer singled and Forsythe walked ahead of a Hanigan sacrifice fly. Pedroia was injured when Forsythe slid head-first into second base on the play.

Kevin Kiermaier walked to fill the sacks once more and Zobrist's grounder from second to short scored Guyer.

Odorizzi gave up his only hit in the fourth, a leadoff single by Will Middlebrooks. He was erased when David Ortiz hit into a 4-6-3 double play and

The bases were loaded again in the Rays' portion of the frame due to a pair of one-out singles followed by a Kiermaier hit-by-pitch. Zobrist's grounder to third brought home Forsythe for a 4-0 game.

Webster left after walking Matt Joyce and allowing a infield hit to Longoria in the home fifth. Alex Wilson entered, but another Tampa rally unfolded. Sox catcher David Ross' throw to first on Guyer's bunt try ended up sailing into right field, scoring both players and leaving Guyer on third. Guyer scored when Forsythe lofted a fly to right.

Boston filled the sacks in the seventh after Odorizzi walked Daniel Nava, Allen Craig and Mookie Betts with two away, but Xander Bogaerts popped to first to end the threat.

After Beliveau retired the side in order in the eighth, Yates worked around a walk to Ortiz and preserved the winning margin.
