Yanks homer twice in 9th to top Red Sox
Sep 5, 2014 - 5:59 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira each belted solo home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the blasts lifting the New York Yankees to a much-needed 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.Down by one entering their final at-bat, Teixeira pulled the Yankees even by greeting Koji Uehara (6-5) with a shot into the right-field second deck. Two batters later, Headley hammered a full-count splitter from the Boston closer well into the seats in right center to allow New York to take the rubber match of this three-game set.
"Every one is fun," said Headley of the walk-off hit. "There isn't a whole lot of better feelings in sports, in baseball than getting a hit like that."
Derek Jeter had a two-run double earlier for the Yankees, with Carlos Beltran adding an RBI single in the triumph.
The Red Sox had homered three times -- two by David Ortiz -- off Yankees starter Chris Capuano, with Brock Holt's solo delivery in the fifth inning giving Boston a 4-3 edge it carried into the ninth.
Capuano surrendered all four Red Sox runs in just 4 1/3 innings of work. Adam Warren (3-5) received the win after tossing a 1-2-3 top of the ninth.
After mustering just one hit and three baserunners against Brandon Workman and relievers Tommy Layne and Junichi Tazaka over the previous five innings, the Yankees' offense came to back to life when Teixeira ended a 14-game homerless drought by connecting off Uehara in the ninth.
Uehara briefly rebounded to strike out Brian McCann, but Headley then worked the count full before getting all of a hanging splitter to produce the game- winning run.
"Anytime you give up a lead in the fashion that we did, those are tough to take," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
The Yankees reached Workman for three runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase an early 3-0 deficit, but Holt broke the deadlock by opening the fifth with a deep fly ball that landed just over the glove of a leaping Ichiro Suzuki and a row deep into the seats in right.
Ortiz, 0-for-8 in the series' first two games, drilled a line-drive homer in the opening inning that quickly sent the Red Sox ahead. The veteran slugger sent a towering blast over the wall with Mookie Betts aboard in his next at- bat to put Boston up 3-0 in the top of the third.
After going 0-for-8 over the first two games of the set, Ortiz broke out in a big way early in the finale. His line-drive homer in the opening inning quickly sent Boston ahead, and the veteran slugger belted a towering blast with Mookie Betts aboard in his next at-bat to put Boston up 3-0 in the top of the third.
Workman struck out five over six solid innings and was reached for three runs, all of which came in the bottom of the third.
Suzuki singled and Jacoby Ellsbury walked to set up Jeter's two-run double, a laser that sailed over Betts' head in center. Beltran sent the Yankee captain home an out later with a single to right.
Game Notes
Workman remained winless since besting Baltimore on June 10 for his only win of the season. The right-hander had lost his last seven starts and has dropped eight straight decisions overall ... New York's Martin Prado sat out a second consecutive day with a strained left hamstring ... Boston's Will Middlebrooks went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and is now hitless in his last 18 at-bats ... The Red Sox completed a 10-game road trip at 5-5.
