Beckham goes deep again as White Sox top Cubs

May 8, 2014 - 5:23 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko each drove in three runs, while Beckham homered for the second straight game as the White Sox topped the Cubs, 8-3, on Wednesday.

Jose Abreu had three hits with two runs scored and he and Konerko both doubled twice in the fourth straight White Sox triumph. The winning streak comes on the heels of four consecutive losses.

All eight Sox runs came in the first five innings against Travis Wood (2-4), who went four-plus and yielded eight hits and five walks with just three strikeouts.

Wood's counterpart John Danks (3-2) did his job for the White Sox, holding the crosstown rivals to three runs on four hits while fanning eight over six innings.

"I was able to stay a little more within myself and for that I had better control," said Danks, referring to his last start where he was touched for eight runs on 10 hits in a loss at Cleveland.

The Cubs, losers in four straight, will look to end their slide in the finale of this home-and-home four-game set on Thursday.

The White Sox got on the board first on Alexei Ramirez's RBI single to center, and the Cubs tied it a half inning later on a Luis Valbuena RBI double.

Moises Sierra reached on an infield single and Adrian Nieto drew a walk to put two on for Beckham in the home fourth, setting the stage for his three-run blast to center.

"They put some swings on some pretty good pitches," said Wood, " but Beckham made me pay when I left one up."

The Cubs got two back in the next half inning. Mike Olt made it 4-2 with a solo shot to leadoff the fifth, and Emilio Bonifacio doubled in Darwin Barney. Danks limited the damage, however, striking out Junior Lake and Anthony Rizzo to strand two baserunners.

The bottom of the fifth featured more fireworks from the White Sox. Abreu and Dayan Viciedo both singled and Ramirez walked to load the bags for Konerko, who cleared them with his double down the left field line.

Wood then gave way to Brian Schlitter, who got Sierra to ground out for the first out. Marcus Semien singled home Konerko though, and it was 8-3 through five.

Neither team pushed across another run the rest of the way.

Game Notes

The White Sox went 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight ... Jake Arrieta is set to make his second start of the season for the Cubs on Thursday, while the White Sox will send Scott Carroll to the mound.
