Cubs hold off Padres
May 25, 2014 - 6:58 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Wood pitched into the eighth inning to help the Chicago Cubs in a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in the third of a four-game set.Wood (5-4) gave up two runs on three hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts, while adding an RBI single at the plate for the Cubs, who have won five of their last seven. Luis Valbuena hit a solo home run and Nate Schierholtz added an RBI.
"I thought Wood did a great job," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria. "He attacks the strike zone. He keeps it low, but he can elevate when he has to."
Carlos Quentin had a pinch-hit two-run home run for the Padres, who have lost five of six. Billy Buckner (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings in his first game with the team.
"Billy had a good curveball tonight and he got through some innings with some early-count outs," said San Diego manager Bud Black about Buckner. "He certainly did his part tonight."
Chicago left men on second and third in the third inning, but got one across in the fourth as Valbuena walked, Welington Castillo singled and Schierholtz followed with a base hit for a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Cubs padded their lead when Valbuena hit a one-out solo homer to right. Two batters later, Schierholtz doubled and, after Darwin Barney was issued an intentional walk, Wood helped his cause with a single to left for a 3-0 lead.
Wood allowed just one runner past second through the first seven innings, but got in trouble in the eighth when he issued a one-out walk to Yasmani Grandal, then served up an 0-1 pitch to Quentin, who crushed it over the left-center wall to make it a 3-2 game.
Neil Ramirez, though, took over on the hill and struck out the next two batters.
Hector Rondon needed just four pitches to close out the ninth inning and pick up his sixth save of the season.
