Cubs beat Giants in continuation of suspended affair

Aug 22, 2014 - 12:37 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants became the first team in 28 years to win a protest, but they still came out on the losing side.

Anthony Rizzo smacked a two-run homer in the first inning on Tuesday and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 2-1 victory over the Giants on Thursday.

Tuesday's game was originally called following a 4-hour, 34-minute rain delay due to unplayable field conditions with the Cubs leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

The grounds crew had trouble covering the field with a tarp once the game was halted. When the tarp was taken off following the lengthy delay, excess water was left throughout the infield dirt.

San Francisco, which is in the thick of the playoff race, claimed that not enough was done to dry the infield in a timely manner and decided to file a protest.

A near two-hour rain delay preceded the beginning of the suspended start.

Rizzo had two of Chicago's three hits. Hector Rondon fired a scoreless ninth to notch his 19th save of the season.

Joe Panik had the lone RBI for San Francisco, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Before the rain came Tuesday, Javier Baez worked a one-out walk in the first before Rizzo launched his two-run shot onto Sheffield Avenue to right for a 2-0 Chicago lead.

The Giants squandered one-out doubles by Hunter Pence and Angel Pagan in the first and fourth innings, respectively.

Chicago starter Tsuyoshi Wada (3-1) allowed six hits and struck out three over five innings, while Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (7-9) gave up two runs on three hits and two walks over four frames.

Yusmeiro Petit and Jacob Turner took the mound for the Giants and Cubs, respectively, in the resumption of the tilt Thursday.

San Francisco cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. Adam Duvall banged a two- out double off the left-field wall and scored on pinch-hitter Panik's single to right, cutting the deficit in half.

The Giants put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Rondon struck out pinch-hitter Gregor Blanco and Pagan grounded one back to Rondon to end the game.

Game Notes

This was the first upheld protest since the Pirates won a claim that a game in Pittsburgh against St. Louis ended prematurely on June 16, 1986 ... Petit struck out five over his two perfect innings, while Turner yielded a run on three hits over two frames ... The Cubs were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, while San Francisco finished 2-for-9.
