Final
Cabrera, Tigers down White Sox
Apr 23, 2014 - 5:21 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer highlighted Detroit's five-run third inning as the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox, 8-6, in the second test of a four-game set.Cabrera also added an RBI double among his three hits for the Tigers, who have won four of their last six games.
Justin Verlander (3-1) fanned seven and surrendered two runs on eight hits and two walks over seven frames to pick up the win. Ian Kinsler posted a pair of hits, RBI and runs scored in the triumph.
"We jumped out to an early lead there in the third. Just tried to execute and conserve my pitch count," Verlander said.
Joba Chamberlain picked up the final out to earn his first save of the season.
Charlie Leesman allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk over 2 2/3 innings for Chicago, which had its brief two-game winning streak snapped. Jose Abreu smacked a solo homer in defeat.
Leesman got the start in place of an injured Chris Sale.
"No offense to Charlie, but I'm sure those guys were pretty excited when they heard Chris was scratched," White Sox DH Adam Dunn said.
Both teams plated a run in the first before Detroit surged ahead following its five-run third.
Austin Romine and Rajai Davis singled to begin the frame and Kinsler doubled down the left field line to bring them both home. Cabrera then sent an opposite-field shot that just cleared the wall in right-center. Victor Martinez doubled next and later scored on Nick Castellanos' sacrifice fly to right and make it 6-1 in favor of Detroit.
RBI doubles by Alex Avila and Rajai Davis in the fifth increased the advantage to 8-1 before the White Sox got a run back in the sixth on a run-scoring base hit by Alexei Ramirez.
Alejandro De Aza lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth, while Paul Konerko hit an RBI single and Dunn added a two-run homer in the ninth to finish the scoring for the White Sox.
Earlier, Abreu's two-out blast in the first opened the scoring, but Cabrera's RBI double in the home half tied it.
