Viciedo, Gillaspie lead ChiSox over Indians
May 26, 2014 - 11:58 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dayan Viciedo belted a three-run homer and Conor Gillaspie was 4-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Indians to open a three-game series.Jose Quintana (3-4) pitched six innings for the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
The White Sox are 5-3 against the Indians this season after losing 17 of 19 to their AL Central rivals last year, including 14 in a row to end the season.
Josh Tomlin (3-2) struck out eight but took the loss in five-plus innings. The right-hander gave up five runs, but only two were earned.
Michael Brantley's RBI single in the third gave the Indians a 1-0 lead but third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall's two-out error in the bottom of the inning allowed the White Sox to go in front for good.
Marcus Semien reached on the error -- the ball went off Chisenhall's glove -- Gillaspie followed with a single and both runners scored on Viciedo's blast to left field on a 1-2 curveball, his fifth homer of the season.
"A hanging curveball. I probably tried to do too much with it," said Tomlin. "It stayed up in the zone too long."
Brantley drew a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, stole second base and scored on Ryan Raburn's single to right field. Raburn tried to take second base on the hit by was thrown out by Moises Sierra on a call that was upheld after an Indians challenge.
Gillaspie led off the bottom of the sixth with a double off Tomlin, went to third on Viciedo's single and scored on Alexei Ramirez's hit off reliever Bryan Shaw. Alejandro De Aza followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2.
It was Gillaspie's first career four-hit game.
"It was just one of those days," he said. "A couple of times they threw it right in the spot where I was looking. That's just the way it goes."
He added an RBI double in the seventh inning and Scott Downs came in to get an inning-ending out after Cleveland loaded the bases against Zach Putnam in the eighth.
Downs worked around a walk in the ninth inning to pick up his first save since 2012.
Game Notes
Chicago catcher Tyler Flowers was ejected by home plate umpire Ron Kulpa for arguing a called third strike to end the bottom of the fourth inning ... The White Sox are 3-2 on a 10-game homestand.
