Scherzer hurls complete game as Tigers blank White Sox

Jun 13, 2014 - 4:21 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Scherzer tossed a three-hit shutout as the Detroit Tigers grabbed a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox in the finale of a rain-shortened three-game set.

Scherzer (8-2) tossed his first career shutout and complete game as he walked three and struck out eight for Detroit, which had lost three straight.

"I finally got that monkey off my back and was able to go the whole nine," said Scherzer. "I finished the deal tonight and it's a great feeling."

Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs, Victor Martinez hit a solo homer and Bryan Holaday went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.

Chris Sale (5-1) allowed a run on five hits with 10 strikeouts over seven innings for Chicago, which got doubles from Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez in the loss.

"I always set my mind to not worry who I'm pitching against, more just who's in their lineup," said Sale. "I just got about things as it's just another start."

Martinez homered -- his 16th of the season -- to lead off the fifth for a 1-0 lead.

Cabrera singled home two more runs in the eighth and Holaday added an RBI single in the ninth for a 4-0 edge.

Chicago left men on second and third in the fourth when Scherzer got Dayan Viciedo to fly out and end the inning. The White Sox didn't get a runner past second base the rest of the game.
