Sale, White Sox down M's

Jul 5, 2014 - 5:10 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Sale fired his second complete game of the season and the Chicago White Sox topped the Seattle Mariners, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game set.

Sale (8-1) struck out 12 and scattered six hits in the seventh complete game of his career for the White Sox, who have won five of their last seven contests.

"It helps the bullpen with him able to do that," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of the complete game. "He's learning to be efficient."

Jose Abreu smacked his MLB-leading 27th homer, Paul Konerko belted a two-run shot and Dayan Viciedo added a solo blast among his career high-tying four hits in the triumph.

Roenis Elias (7-7) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings for Seattle, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.

"He was nasty tonight, it was tough to see early on, he found his groove," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said.

The White Sox opened the scoring with a run in the fourth, added four in the fourth and pushed across two more in the eighth.

Viciedo cracked a leadoff shot into the seats to left in the fourth.

Moises Sierra began the fifth with a single, Tyler Flowers was hit by a pitch and Adam Eaton followed by whacking a double just out of the reach of a tracking Michael Saunders in right to plate Sierra.

Gordon Beckham lined a sacrifice fly to left, which brought home Flowers and Abreu laced a two-run blast that just cleared the wall in left to extend the Chicago margin to 5-0.

Viciedo hit a one-out single in the eighth and Konerko followed with his two- run shot to left and make it 7-0.

The Mariners ended Sale's shutout bid in the ninth when Corey Hart lifted a sacrifice fly into right.

Game Notes

Chicago was 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while Seattle finished 0-for-4 ... Outfielder Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment to make room for Hart's return from the 15-day disabled list.
