Mariners edge White Sox in 14-inning thriller
Jul 6, 2014 - 12:47 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Miller's RBI ground-rule double in the 14th inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.Seattle's Felix Hernandez and Chicago's Jose Quintana kept the game scoreless until Hernandez gave up a pair of runs in the eighth.
The Mariners tied the score in the top of the ninth, then won it in the 14th after Michael Saunders hit a one-out single off Ronald Belisario (3-5), stole second base and scored on Miller's one-hop drive over the left-center field wall.
They bounced back after being shut down by Chicago ace Chris Sale on Friday to win for the 11th time in 14 games. Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) pitched two perfect innings for the victory and Fernando Rodney threw a 1-2-3 14th for his 25th save.
"We just kept fighting," said Miller. "It was a good game -- exhausting, but a lot of fun."
Belisario went three innings for the White Sox, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Hernandez was nearly unhittable through seven innings, giving up only a leadoff single to Adam Eaton in the first.
But Conor Gillaspie tripled to start the eighth -- the first White Sox player to reach third base -- and Dayan Viciedo hit the next pitch to right-center to break a scoreless tie.
Tyler Flowers added a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Moises Sierra, who had avoided a tag on a rundown play and was ruled safe at third base after a successful White Sox challenge.
In the top of the ninth, Robinson Cano worked a five-pitch walk off Eric Surkamp and Corey Hart singled off Zach Putnam to start a game-tying rally for Seattle. Cano went to third on Kyle Seager's line out and scored on Mike Zunino's sacrifice fly.
Dustin Ackley, pinch-running for Hart, moved up to third on Logan Morrison's infield single -- the hard shot was deflected by first baseman Jose Abreu -- and scored the tying run on Saunders' single through the right side to make it 2-2.
Hernandez, the AL Pitcher of the Month for June, extended his team record to 10 straight starts with at least seven innings pitched and two runs or fewer allowed. He struck out eight in his eight innings and issued one walk.
Quintana may have been even better, going 7 2/3 shutout innings and striking out 10 while allowing just four hits and a walk.
"(He) pitched an incredible ballgame today and deserved the win," said Putnam. "That's the way the game goes sometimes."
Hernandez retired 11 in a row after Eaton's hit in the first inning until Adam Dunn drew a two-out walk in the fourth after Seattle center fielder James Jones made a leaping catch at the wall on Abreu's deep fly ball.
Mariners left fielder Willie Bloomquist did the same in the fifth on Viciedo's blast, potentially stealing a home run.
Game Notes
Morrison and Saunders had three hits each for Seattle ... Eaton made an acrobatic catch in the top of the 11th inning on a long drive by Morrison to center field. Eaton got turned around as he tracked back on the ball but reached out to his right to make the catch as he crashed into the wall.
