Abreu homers again as ChiSox down Indians
Jul 13, 2014 - 1:54 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu clubbed his major league- leading 29th homer of the season, a two-run shot that set the tone for the Chicago White Sox's 6-2 decision over the Cleveland Indians.Gordon Beckham added a two-run double and Scott Carroll tossed five scoreless innings before exiting with a back injury to help the White Sox halt a three- game losing streak.
"I tried to do my best to stay out there as long as I could," Carroll said.
Prior to his departure, Carroll (4-5) held the Indians to a pair of singles and a walk in the 29-year-old rookie's second straight impressive start on the road. He yielded just one hit over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to best Boston in Fenway Park on Monday.
Cleveland's Zach McAllister (3-5), making his first major league start since May 21, also pitched well despite being hung with the loss. The right-hander was reached for three runs on only four hits over seven solid frames.
"I felt like I got in a good groove," McAllister said. "I made a couple bad pitches that really hurt me."
Michael Brantley had a solo homer for the Indians and Jason Kipnis went 1- for-3 with an RBI in defeat.
McAllister, called up earlier in the day to fill-in for an injured Justin Masterson, set down nine of the first 10 Chicago hitters before issuing a leadoff walk to Alexei Ramirez in the fourth. His next pitch wound up in the Chicago bullpen courtesy of Abreu, who launched a slider the other way to break a scoreless deadlock on the White Sox' initial hit of the day.
The Cleveland hurler didn't surrender another hit until Alejandro De Aza and Moises Sierra came through with consecutive singles to begin the sixth. McAllister got Abreu to bounce into a double play this time, but Adam Dunn followed with a single off the right-field wall that plated De Aza for a 3-0 lead.
Carroll, meanwhile, began his stint with two perfect innings and stranded two Indians in both the third and fourth. Zach Putnam kept the shutout bid going upon taking over in the sixth, but got into a bases-loaded jam after giving up three singles an inning later.
Javy Guerra then entered and walked Kipnis to put Cleveland on the board, though he prevented further damage with an inning-ending strikeout of Asdrubal Cabrera.
Brantley got the Tribe within one with a leadoff homer off Eric Surkamp in the eighth. Cleveland didn't get another runner on the rest of the way, however, and the White Sox put the contest out of reach with a three-run ninth.
Austin Adams, making his major league debut for the Indians, was greeted by a Dayan Viciedo single and a Conor Gillaspie double to start the top of the ninth. Beckham brought them both home with a double into the left-field corner and later crossed the plate on Leury Garcia's sacrifice fly.
