Gomes' HR pushes Indians past White Sox

Jul 14, 2014 - 12:31 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Yan Gomes came through with a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning that lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Gomes followed a single by Nick Swisher with an opposite-field blast off Javy Guerra (0-2) that sent Cleveland ahead for good after the Tribe blew a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth.

Gomes also knocked in the Indians' other run with a second-inning single, while Trevor Bauer struck out a career-high 10 batters over 6 2/3 scoreless innings despite not factoring in the decision.

Leury Garcia and Gordon Beckham each recorded RBI singles against Bryan Shaw (4-1) in the White Sox' half of the eighth to temporarily erase a 1-0 deficit. Garcia finished 2-for-4, while MLB home run leader Jose Abreu had three hits -- though all were singles.

Chicago, which lost four of its last five games prior to the All-Star break, also received a solid outing from starter John Danks. The veteran lefty scattered seven hits while yielding just one run over seven innings.

"We need to go out and play better baseball all the way around," Danks said. "We just have to put it all together."

Shaw spoiled Bauer's strong performance by being tagged for three hits in the top of the eighth, but Gomes picked up the reliever by hammering a slider from Guerra into the right-field bullpen to put the Indians back in front.

"I was just trying to do the same thing Swisher did," Gomes said. "I didn't think I was going to (hit a home run) but it felt pretty good."

Cody Allen then finished the job in the ninth, fanning two while setting the side down in order to notch his 12th save.

The White Sox stranded 10 runners over the first seven innings and 12 in all, but were finally able to break out with a couple of clutch hits while down a run in the eighth.

Conor Gillaspie began the rally with a one-out single against Shaw and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Beckham -- mired in a 2-for-36 slump -- laced a base hit up the middle to forge a 1-1 tie.

After a Tyler Flowers grounder pushed Beckham to second, Garcia singled under the glove of Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis to briefly give Chicago the lead.

Cleveland had its own struggles with men in scoring position throughout the contest, though it managed to push home an early run when back-to-back singles by Swisher and Gomes followed Danks' walk to Ryan Raburn in the second.

The White Sox had their best chance against Bauer in the top of the second, recording three singles against the right-hander during the frame. However, Gillaspie was doubled off of first base when casually retreating on Beckham's fly ball to left fielder Mike Aviles to help kill the scoring chance.

Chicago later put the first two men aboard in the sixth, but Bauer prevented any damage by striking out Beckham and Garcia around a groundout.

Game Notes

The White Sox recalled infielder Carlos Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte before the game to fill in for All-Star shortstop Alexei Ramirez (back). He went 0- for-5 and committed an error in his MLB debut ... Danks made his 200th career start ... Abreu, seeking to become the first rookie since Mark McGwire in 1987 to lead the majors in homers at the break, extended his hitting streak to eight games ... Chicago fell to 3-12 at Progressive Field since the start of the 2013 season.
