Beckham helps White Sox edge Giants in extras
Aug 13, 2014 - 6:57 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Beckham's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in the first game of a brief two-game series.Jordan Danks walked with one out and Moises Sierra singled to put runners on the corners in the 10th against Santiago Casilla (1-2). Sierra stole second before Alejandro De Aza grounded back to second. Danks raced home, but was thrown out to temporarily keep the score tied at 2-2.
The next batter was Beckham, and after saving the game in the bottom of the ninth with a terrific defensive play, the second baseman lined a single to left to plate Sierra and give the Sox a lead.
"Gordon had a good game," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "The plays he made defensively tonight, besides just the hit, the plays he made defensively saved the game for us."
Zach Putnam (4-2) recorded the final four outs for the Sox to earn the win.
Chris Sale was in line for the win before getting betrayed by his bullpen. Sale was his usual dominant self for Chicago, tossing eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts before Jake Petricka came on in the ninth looking to nail down the save.
Pablo Sandoval slapped a single into left to lead off the frame, and Michael Morse and Travis Ishikawa both singled back up the middle to load the bases with no outs.
Joe Panik then grounded into a double-play to plate Sandoval. Beckham made a diving stab on Panik's grounder and flipped to Alexei Ramirez covering second with his glove to start the double-play.
Brandon Crawford's single to right tied the game and chased Petricka from the contest. Putnam came on and struck out Gregor Blanco to send the game into extras.
"Great job these guys did coming back," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "Down two in the ninth and we had some great at-bats. I think we all thought Panik's ball was getting through. They not only got the out, but they turned one of the best double-plays I've seen."
Adam Dunn gave the White Sox an early lead with his 18th home run of the season in the top of the first inning against Ryan Vogelsong.
Vogelsong allowed just two more hits during his seven-inning outing but was overshadowed by Sale. Vogelsong walked two and struck out five for the Giants, losers in five straight.
De Aza singled to lead off the game. Jose Abreu took his place on first base after a fielder's choice and with two outs, Dunn crushed a 1-0 offering over the wall in center.
San Francisco's best chance against Sale came in the bottom of the first, when Hunter Pence tripled with one out. Buster Posey then grounded to Alexei Ramirez at shortstop, and Pence got a slow jump before breaking for home. Ramirez's throw was off target, but Tyler Flowers had time to secure the relay and tag Pence to keep the Giants off the scoreboard.
